Sustainable Finance

Systemic economic changes are essential to decarbonization
The rapid decarbonization necessary to limit global mean temperature rise to well below 2° C requires systemic changes within our financial and economic systems. The cost of capital and understanding of the risks associated with high-carbon investments must increase, while capital costs and perceived risks of decarbonization decrease. To win on climate, financial markets and public investments must align with—and serve—international climate goals.

The ClimateWorks Sustainable Finance Portfolio

The ClimateWorks Sustainable Finance Portfolio aims to catalyze financial and market changes that accelerate climate action. The Sustainable Finance Portfolio has currently prioritized three strategic initiatives—multi-grant transnational strategies targeting specific outcomes. It also incubates and supports activities across a wider array of themes.

Climate Risk Analysis, Disclosure, and Supervision (C-RADS) initiative

Capital markets inadequately account for the long-term physical, legal, and transition risks caused by climate change and the political response to it. The C-RADS initiative, which engages both market actors and financial authorities, aims to translate the sector’s increasing awareness of climate risk into the large-scale capital reallocation necessary to decarbonize the real economy.

Entrepreneurial Public Investment For Climate (EPIC) initiative

Public investment is essential to financing the low-carbon transition. The EPIC initiative aims to support the design and establishment of green investment banks and similar institutions capable of fulfilling the public sector’s potential to catalyze the commercialization and deployment of low-carbon innovation.

Chinese Overseas Finance Initiative (COFI)

China is investing more than $1 trillion in infrastructure across the 70+ countries of its Belt and Road Initiative. These investments have the potential to accelerate the low-carbon transition in emerging centers of economic growth. COFI is working to help the Belt and Road meet its potential as an engine for low-carbon development.
