These key data points come from Climate-Smart Development: Adding Up the Benefits of Actions that Help Build Prosperity, End Poverty and Combat Climate Change, developed in 2014 by ClimateWorks and the World Bank. Building on research to quantify the benefits of climate action and highlight scalable solutions, the report provides a framework to better understand the climate risks and benefits in different pathways to sustainable development. Its findings clearly demonstrate that climate action can both be a boon for economic activity, and deliver significant benefits to the climate.

The Transportation Portfolio

The Transportation Portfolio focuses on achieving reductions in carbon emissions by supporting policies for cleaner and more efficient vehicle and fuel technologies, increasing availability of public transit and biking, promoting new urban design, and broadening support for a transition away from oil and toward low-carbon alternatives.

ClimateWorks and its partners support initiatives around the world — in China, the EU, India, Latin America, the US, and transnationally — to create a sustainable, affordable, and low-carbon mobility system for people and goods movement. We work with NGO’s, researchers, businesses, policy-makers, consumers, and other stakeholders to advance sound policy, innovation, and investment to expand the choices for moving people and goods to those that are cleaner and more efficient.


Increased fuel-efficiency for cars and trucks can slash climate pollution, reduce dependence on oil, and improve air quality. Through research, advocacy, and support for more effective policy design and implementation, ClimateWorks and its partners are promoting strong fuel-efficiency programs in regions with established and rapidly growing vehicle markets.

Next-Generation Vehicles

Electric-drive and other clean vehicles make up a small proportion of today’s global fleet, but markets for these technologies are poised to grow quickly. ClimateWorks and its partners work with advocates, the private sector, and other stakeholders to advance policies that will accelerate the transition from gasoline and diesel vehicles to new, innovative, low- or zero-emissions technologies.

Urban Design & Public Transportation

In 2050, when global population is projected to be 9.6 billion, seven out of 10 people will be urbanites — living in cities, many of which will be built in the coming decades. The design of these future cities and the expansion of existing cities will have profound impacts on climate, public health, and prosperity. ClimateWorks and its partners are supporting initiatives that promote sustainable and scalable urban planning, walkable and vibrant communities, high-quality public transportation, and financing for smart cities.

Public Support

Achieving the global transition to clean transportation requires engaged and informed citizens whose policy and consumer preferences are critical to moving economies beyond oil. Through compelling and targeted communication strategies, ClimateWorks and its partners are accelerating this process by supporting efforts to build broader public and political awareness of the benefits of transitioning from a system dependent on fossil fuels to a system that offers a wider diversity of cleaner choices for consumers and businesses.


A country emitting as much as the global aviation sector would rank seventh in global greenhouse gas emissions, after Germany. Through research and advocacy, ClimateWorks and its partners engage in the effort to establish a market system for international aviation emissions and to increase the fuel efficiency of aircraft.

Transportation Research and Intelligence Network

The Transportation program established the Transportation Research and Intelligence Network (TRAIN) to provide intelligence and communications support to its partners. The TRAIN platform serves as a clearinghouse and synthesizer of the latest developments in oil and clean mobility markets, technologies, policies, and strategies.

Anthony Eggert

Program Director, Transportation

Anthony Eggert is a director at ClimateWorks Foundation which mobilizes philanthropy to solve the climate crisis and ensure a prosperous future. Anthony comes to ClimateWorks with 20 years of public and private sector experience working on clean energy technologies and policies. Prior to ClimateWorks, Anthony served as the founding director of the UC Davis Policy Institute for Energy, Environment and the Economy dedicated to leveraging university expertise to inform better policy. Anthony public sector experience includes serving as an appointee of Governors Jerry Brown and Arnold Schwarzenegger including as Senior Advisor to the Chair of the California Air Resources Board, Commissioner of the California Energy Commission and Deputy Secretary of California Environmental Protection Agency where he helped implement California’s landmark clean energy and climate policies. Anthony’s started his career as an automotive engineer and program manager at Ford Motor Company working on regulatory compliance and advanced vehicle technology development. Anthony received a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering at University of Wisconsin-Madison and master degree in transportation technology and policy at UC Davis.

Lina Fedirko

Senior Associate, Transportation, Advisory & Research

Lina Fedirko is a Senior Program Associate on the Transportation and Advisory and Research teams at ClimateWorks Foundation.

Lina’s research and programmatic implementation to date has focused on global urban climate change and transportation policy. Most recently, Lina contributed policy research to the Urban Transportation Chapter of Climate Change and Cities, Second Assessment Report of the Urban Climate Change Research Network (UCCRN), a state-of-knowledge publication examining 16 urban sectors with respect to climate issues.

Locally, Lina assisted a New York City Economic Development Corporation in planning a $1.2 million program addressing access issues in low income neighborhoods, and led a transit-oriented development zoning study for a housing non-profit examining flood impacts and adaptation options following Hurricane Irene. Globally, Lina has collaborated with UN Habitat Cities and Climate Change initiative to evaluate the effectiveness of Participatory Climate Change Risk Assessments in South-East Asia and the Pacific.

Lina earned an MS in Urban Policy Analysis and Sustainability Strategies from Milano School of International Affairs, Management, and Urban Policy at the New School University. She holds a BFA from Pratt Institute. Lina is fluent in Ukrainian and conversational in Russian and Polish.
