Unfortunately, today’s cooling technologies consume massive amounts of energy and release super-polluting greenhouse gases, damaging our climate.
At present, cooling produces more than 7% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and without clean cooling technologies and a full renewable energy transition, these emissions could double by mid-century.
Cooling isn’t just a climate issue, it’s also an equity and development issue. Extreme heat and a lack of access to cooling threatens the health and safety of people around the world, as well as the quality and safety of food and critical medicines that rely on cooling. Access to cooling is also a racial and social justice issue, with underserved and lower-income communities and countries feeling adverse effects the most.
Clean Cooling Collaborative
Clean Cooling Collaborative (formerly the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program) is an initiative of ClimateWorks focused on transforming the cooling sector and making efficient, climate-friendly cooling accessible for all.

While Clean Cooling Collaborative is a global program, its current grantmaking will largely occur in the four regions that are projected to contribute 75% of cooling-related emissions between now and 2050: China, India, Southeast Asia, and the United States.

K-CEP: Scaling up clean cooling for all (2017-2021)
In 2016, 17 foundations and individuals collaborated ahead of the Montreal Protocol meeting in Kigali, Rwanda. They pledged more than $50 million to create the largest-ever fund of its kind for action on efficient, climate-friendly cooling. The following spring, ClimateWorks launched K-CEP.
Between 2017 to 2021, K-CEP grew from a bright idea to a thriving initiative working in 57 countries to achieve results at scale.
Now, as the Clean Cooling Collaborative, the initiative is building on its efforts to elevate cooling on the global agenda — catalyzing governments, companies, and organizations to bring efficient, climate-friendly policies, financing, and technologies to the world.
