Statement from ClimateWorks on the U.S. EPA’s Repeal of the Endangerment Finding

SAN FRANCISCO – February 12, 2026 – In response to the repeal of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Endangerment Finding, ClimateWorks Foundation issued the following statement:

The repeal of the U.S. EPA’s Endangerment Finding is a profound step backward that puts lives at risk and shifts the costs of harmful pollution from trillion-dollar industries onto American families, communities, and future generations. This move is a rejection of settled science, law, and the will of the American public. Simply put, Americans are more endangered because of this reckless decision.

From deadly heat waves and dirtier air to extreme storms, floods, and rising health risks, people everywhere in America and around the world are already living with the reality of a rapidly warming planet – harms that the Endangerment Finding was designed to address. The evidence of damage and costs of climate change has only strengthened since the finding was issued in 2009. Contrary to the claims that this rollback might lead to cost savings, EPA’s own analyses show that climate protections bring trillions of dollars in health and economic benefits to the American people.

Those benefits translate directly into lower costs for households and cleaner air. Under the EPA’s own analysis, the 2024 car standards would cut fueling and repair costs, saving drivers of new cars approximately $6,000 over the lifetime of that vehicle, while cutting pollution and strengthening energy security.

The loss of this cornerstone protection comes at a moment when many countries around the world are accelerating climate action because clean energy solutions are cheaper, quicker to build, and boost competitiveness and energy independence. ClimateWorks remains committed to working alongside philanthropy, civil society, businesses, and communities to advance climate solutions that safeguard lives and livelihoods in the U.S. and globally.
