China's new five-year plan aims to meet ambitious climate and energy targets

With the adoption of China’s 12th Five-Year Plan, China’s leaders have declared that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an integral part of their economic strategy.

Clean, efficient energy technologies are a core part of this new development strategy. In recent years, similar policies made China a world leader in wind and solar power. But China’s continued economic growth, massive expansion of infrastructure, and urban population explosion pose significant challenges to its energy and emissions goals.

Written by policy experts at the China Sustainable Energy Program, “The Race Is On: China Kick-Starts Its Clean Economy,” is the latest ClimateWorks Network Knowledge Series. The report outlines the steps China is taking to meet its climate and energy targets, and suggests ways to address the challenges. As nations worldwide grapple with similar issues, they can learn from each others’ efforts and vie for solutions in the global race to a prosperous, low-carbon future.
